Greetings! Despite the short notice, 9 or 10 of us were able to join Pia Klaar’s guided tour of the Teacher Networking Center. In addition to our host, Pia, participants included (SL names): Brighid Amat, Spierce Blackadder, KarenSPC Fride, Kallisto Ihnen, Milos Lindquist, Claird Loon, Gwylym Loon, Picky Mills, (Topquark Mills, are you a Sloan-C member?) and Siri Vezina. Please let me know if I missed anyone. I posted a photo from the session on my ning page photo area.
Below are my notes from the field trip based on the session transcript:
Pia had been collecting educational resources and gadgets in Second Life and decided to house them in space that she rented on EduIsland II. She developed the Teacher Networking Center so that educators could become more familiar with resources and gadgets that could be used for education; have a place to try them out; and to provide a space for educators to meet up and hold sessions. Pia partnered with Tek Zeno, who was also interested in assisting educators in Second Life and providing them with a place to meet.
Some of the resources Pia collected were free, others were purchased. The materials that are on display at TNC are only a small sampling of what Pia has in her inventory. Examples of the resources she demonstrated or spoke about were: presentation tools, speakeasy HUD (a way to put presentation notes into note cards that can be integrated into a slideshow), communal whiteboards, touch boards, flat screen videos, message boards, a holodeck (a “house” in which different rooms can be rezzed so the interiors change, e.g. Google spacebox on Commonwealth Island, holodeck on EdTech Island, and the one at the Boise State University site), flipbook, calendar, and visitor counter. The Center also has a room where Pia collects faculty-oriented freebies from around SL. These resources include toolkits and how-tos and can be shared.
Pia recommended a number of inworld sites for educational scripts, tools, gadgets, and other resources, including PixelTrix, Designs by Dani, NZ Tech HQ – Gadgets and vendors, Nutty Toy, and Crystal Gadgets. She directed the group to ICT – the Information Communications and Technology Library; it is an excellent resource for free and low-cost tools and scripts and an absolute “must visit.”
Feel free to drop by the TNC at your convenience, look around the different floors, and contact Pia Klaar or Tek Zeno for more information. If you find or develop additional resources which might be of interest to the center, please give them a shout. TNC slurl:
